A story of success one year on:
A year ago we approached you for your tracks data to have it included in a national dataset of Walking and Biking Tracks.
You and the LGGA project team made this happen and a national tracks dataset has been available from the LINZ data service since October 2014. It’s a significant achievement and the project team are really pleased to report on this. It has been well used since it was made available: 3,405 views and 361 downloads by October 2015.
The dataset data is now an integral layer for wams.org.nz, giving their users the ability to nationally view and search within the mapping site. (See below a visualisation of where people have been using the data from WAMS)

We have also had reports of how useful it is to central government, other organisations and individuals. It is rewarding to hear that – you put in effort to get the data collated; then the project team worked very hard to pull it all together into a single dataset.
What next?
Now we are taking a deep breath and asking you for your data again. For some of you this will be an update. For some of you, this will your first time and we welcome getting your data. We would like to have a push to get the data updated before the summer ready for all those folks who will be getting out and about. Last year there was a noticeable spike in usage in December. Information to help you provide the data:
If you haven’t supplied data before, the best place to start is the User Guide and data templates.
The project team have recently added a domain to describe spatial accuracy which can be downloaded in excel or this google sheet.
Also don’t forget each of your tracks should have a unique number.
The data should be open and able to be reused – for example CC-BY (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/nz/). If you do not have clear licensing set up for your tracks data, please refer to LGGA's Releasing Council Geospatial Data blog http://lgga-nz.blogspot.co.nz/p/toolkit.html
There are a few options for getting tracks data to LINZ:
WEB SERVICE:
If your data is already available in the standard via web download or web services (e.g. WFS) – please provide LINZ the details through to Customer Services (customersupport at linz.govt.nz) with the specific subject line “LGGA National Tracks” by 11th December 2015 and they’ll help themselves. LINZ will inform you when they have picked up the data.
ADOPT DATA STRUCTURE:
Map your tracks data into the tracks data model (based on the guide and data templates http://lgga-nz.blogspot.co.nz/p/tracks-project.html) and send it through to Customer Services (customersupport at linz.govt.nz) with the specific subject line “LGGA National Tracks” by 11th December 2015.
JUST GIVE US YOUR TRACKS:
Simply extract your existing tracks data from your database (in a common geo data format, shape, geodatabase, kml, map info, etc) and send it through to Customer Services (customersupport at linz.govt.nz) with the specific subject line “LGGA National Tracks”. If you have a description/metadata and spec you use to manage this data, please send that through too by 11th December 2015. LINZ will then process the information for you into the agreed data structure.
FTP OPTION:
A secure FTP site has been setup at LINZ for you to upload your tracks data. Please contact Brent Robertson brobertson at linz.govt.nz for the FTP login details
