You may be aware, LINZ recently undertook an exercise to identify the key datasets, and fitness of those datasets, in relation to resilience and climate change in New Zealand. One of those priority datasets was coastline. It was determined that the current national coastline dataset LINZ provides (based on 1:50k Topomaps) is not of sufficient accuracy, so LINZ has committed to the creation of a new national coastline dataset based on the best available data by June 2020.
The data LINZ currently holds has been collected over time, and digitised from imagery for the purpose of creating topographic maps and hydrographic charts. We understand that councils may have a better-resolution dataset that they’ve captured for their own needs.
We are very keen to involve councils in this project to:
a) incorporate any ‘higher quality’ council coastline data into the improved national coastline dataset, and
b) better understand councils requirements in relation to the accuracy of coastline data for resilience and climate change purposes.
Analysis will be undertaken ( based on requirements) as to the relevance of the various datasets for an improved national dataset. This analysis is likely to include a) coastline definition (MHWS, MHW, MSL, LAT) b) capture date and c) capture resolution.
